Solar eclipse brings short-term shifts in animal behavior and weather

Parts of Europe and several Arab countries are witnessing a rare solar eclipse on Saturday, with some regions seeing a total eclipse and others a partial one. The sudden darkness has prompted reports of animals behaving as though night has fallen, with birds returning to roost and insects and spiders shifting their activity patterns. A study of the 2017 eclipse found that traffic accidents increased during the event, linked to heavier congestion, distracted drivers and travel to unfamiliar viewing spots. Temperatures are dropping temporarily as sunlight is blocked, with partial eclipses producing a 1–3°C decline and total eclipses bringing decreases of roughly 5°C depending on the region and weather conditions. The rapid cooling of the surface can also affect near-ground air movement, causing wind speeds to dip briefly and shift direction.
