Newark imposes curfew around migrant detention center

NEWARK, United States — Newark Mayor Ras Baraka declared a curfew on Sunday around the Delaney Hall migrant detention center in New Jersey. The order will run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time, according to the announcement. New Jersey Gov. Kathy Murphy said protesters in the area had used barricades as weapons and set tires on fire. She called on demonstrators to calm down and focus on improving conditions at the detention center. Protests at Delaney Hall began earlier this month after activists said detainees had started a hunger strike in response to poor conditions. The center has a capacity of about 1,000 people.
