The Iraq Border Ports Authority intercepted its largest-ever smuggling attempt during a surprise inspection at Um Kasr Port in Basra. Authorities discovered a vast array of contraband concealed beneath low-value goods in containers that had remained pending for several years.
Seized items include a significant quantity of smuggled pharmaceuticals, including paracetamol tablets, medical treatments, vitamins, and various medical devices. The operation also uncovered more than 15,000 mobile phones, thousands of iPads, and 2,000 Apple headphones.
In addition to electronics and medicine, officials seized an aircraft used for training that had evaded inspection for over five months. The shipment also contained illegal vehicles, motorcycles, and automotive spare parts.
Border Ports Authority Chairman Omar Adnan al-Waili stated that the government will maintain zero tolerance for any activities that threaten the national economy or public safety.
