Youns Mahmoud Elected President of Iraq Football Association

Iraq football legend Youns Mahmoud has won the Iraq Football Association presidential election, taking office to lead the sport’s next phase as preparations intensify for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The vote took place with the participation of FIFA and AFC representatives and was conducted by open count. Mahmoud received 38 votes in the election, while his rival Adnan Dargal won 21. Of the 61 members, 59 cast ballots in the contest. Known by the nickname “Sufah,” Mahmoud will now oversee Iraq football’s new period as president. One of his first priorities will be managing the preparation process for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Work is also continuing to determine the other members of the new board after the election results were announced.
