Tensions have escalated between the US Defense Department and Elon Muskโs SpaceX over the cost of Starlink services used in wartime operations. The dispute centers on a higher service level for military communications, with monthly fees reportedly sought to rise from about $5,000 to $25,000.
The disagreement focused on the use of Starlink to control low-cost combat drones and the growing expense of that arrangement. The Pentagon ultimately accepted the price increase, a move that reportedly nearly doubled the cost of a single drone.
The report also included plans to provide direct Starlink connections to users in Iran so they could bypass internet restrictions. That element added to the broader controversy over the use of the satellite network in conflict and restricted-information environments.
Musk said the report was misleading and argued that the civilian Starlink system was being inappropriately used for military purposes. He maintained that the account did not accurately reflect the nature of the service.
