World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the pace of Ebola’s spread in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has now exceeded the capacity of health teams to respond. He warned that every delay in detecting infections is making control more difficult and that the outbreak will worsen before any improvement is seen.
Latest figures show the number of suspected deaths linked to the outbreak has reached 220. In Uganda, two more cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 7.
Ghebreyesus said he will travel to the region tomorrow to inspect in Kirkuk, which is under the control of the Popular Mobilization Forces. The announcement comes as the World Health Organization warns neighboring countries to take urgent measures because of the rapid rise in Ebola cases in Uganda.
