Two separate deaths in Basra on Monday evening left the city in mourning, after a police commissioner assigned to stadium security died by suicide at his post and a young man drowned after being thrown from Saad Bridge as a prank. Security forces opened investigations into both incidents.
Security sources said the police officer shot himself while on duty at the stadium security site. Forces deployed to the scene recovered the body and began a wide-ranging inquiry to determine the reason for the suicide.
A second tragedy unfolded in the Zureiji area, north of the city, where a young man was reportedly thrown from Saad Bridge by his friends in what was intended as a joke. After falling into the water, he drowned and died.
Security forces are conducting a detailed review and investigation into the bridge incident as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the young man's death.
