Livestock markets in Duhok have grown busier as Eid Al-Adha approaches, with noticeable increases in sheep and cattle sales. Sellers said prices are significantly higher than last year, linking the rise to reduced livestock imports from abroad and a decline in the local herd.
Despite the higher prices, residents are still trying to fulfill the Eid sacrifice, and some families are opting to buy a cow jointly. Local cattle are drawing stronger demand because of their meat quality, and most of the sales are being made from domestic animals.
The Duhok Veterinary Directorate urged citizens to carry out slaughter at official abattoirs, warning that home slaughter carries a risk of infectious disease. It said veterinary teams will be present at slaughterhouses throughout the holiday.
The directorate added that animals will undergo health checks before and after slaughter.
