Researchers at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom have found that the variety of fruits and vegetables consumed plays a more decisive role in heart health than the overall amount eaten. The team analyzed the dietary habits of more than 30,000 people in the UK and US using biomarkers, focusing on flavanol compounds linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Even among participants who met the recommended five daily portions of fruits and vegetables, many were found to have insufficient flavanol intake. The study identified foods with the highest flavanol content per portion, including peaches, blueberries, raspberries, green tea, beans, cherries and unpeeled apples. Researchers said that adding a handful of blueberries, a cup of green tea or a small serving of beans to the daily diet could substantially boost flavanol intake. The findings suggest that the specific types of produce chosen may be more important than total consumption in achieving cardiovascular benefits, according to the research team.
