Russian ophthalmologist Prof. Tatyana Shilova has explained that frequent eyelid twitching is usually caused by involuntary contractions of the muscles of the upper or lower eyelid rather than the eye itself, and is generally harmless. According to Shilova, common triggers include sleep deprivation, fatigue, stress and prolonged computer use, as well as heavy coffee, strong brewed tea and energy drink consumption. Dryness and irritation of the eye surface, alcohol, smoking and certain medications can also provoke the spasms. In straightforward cases, restoring a regular sleep pattern, reducing eye strain, taking screen breaks and temporarily limiting caffeine are usually sufficient, she said. Shilova stressed that magnesium or other supplements should not be taken without medical advice and that a deficiency cannot be assumed from a single symptom. She recommended consulting an ophthalmologist if twitching lasts more than one to two weeks, recurs regularly or intensifies, or is accompanied by redness, pain, swelling, discharge or blurred vision. Referral to a neurologist is advised if the twitching spreads to other facial muscles, remains one-sided, or involves forceful involuntary closing of the eyelid. Shilova called for emergency medical attention if symptoms include facial asymmetry, numbness, weakness in an arm or leg, difficulty speaking, double vision, a severe headache or sudden loss of vision.
