Basra declares Sunday public holiday over heat and Karbala pilgrimage

In a written statement, the governorate said the decision was taken in the public interest and on the governor's instructions. It framed the holiday as a measure to protect residents and public employees from the strain of extreme summer heat, while also enabling state workers to join the annual Arbaeen observance in the neighboring holy city. The governorate noted the religious significance of the visit for believers in justifying the closure. Basra has recorded summer temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius this year, conditions that have disrupted daily routines and public-sector work across the southern Iraqi province.
