BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Thursday it struck Jordan's al-Azraq Air Base with ballistic missiles, claiming three U.S. F-35 fighter jets were destroyed and three others sustained heavy damage. The Guards said the attack was retaliation for a U.S. airstrike on two residences on Iran's Qeshm Island in the south of the country, which they said killed a mother, father and one child and injured two other children. In a statement issued as Communiquรฉ No. 55, the Revolutionary Guards said the operation was carried out by its revolutionary aviation forces, that the landing and maintenance platform of the F-35s was hit, and that officers, technicians and engineers were among those killed. The statement was carried by Iranian state-linked media channels. Jordan's army said earlier in the day that five missiles launched from Iran had been detected by air defense systems and intercepted in line with established defense protocols. The two accounts could not be independently reconciled. No further details were immediately available from U.S. or Jordanian officials on casualties or damage at the base.
