Rare lung surgery successfully performed on one-day-old baby in Kirkuk

KIRKUK, Iraq — Azadi Teaching Hospital in Kirkuk announced that surgeons successfully removed a congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation from the lower lobe of the right lung in a one-day-old newborn. The hospital said the procedure was led by thoracic and vascular surgeon Ahmed Noureddin, with a team drawn from the thoracic surgery, pediatric and neonatal, obstetrics, and radiology and ultrasound departments. Hospital officials said the congenital condition had been detected during prenatal examinations, allowing a multidisciplinary treatment plan to be prepared and the timing of the delivery to be set. Shortly after birth, the baby underwent surgery lasting about two hours, during which the malformed lower lobe of the right lung was removed. The newborn was monitored in the neonatal intensive care unit for eight days following the operation before being discharged in stable health, according to the hospital.
