Iraq launches CMC Speed Test app to measure telecom service quality

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Media and Communications Commission has launched CMC Speed Test, a digital platform that measures the quality of internet and communication services at points of use, the commission's chief executive, Belig Abu Kell, announced on Monday. The commission said the application compiles user-generated results into an independent database to evaluate network performance and identify areas with weak service. Abu Kell said the app measures more than download and upload speeds, including ping, jitter, packet loss, network type, operator information and radio signal indicators. According to the commission, the crowdsourced measurement method lets users supply real data from their own areas, enabling coverage gaps, low speeds and performance drops to be tracked on a map. The platform features a section allowing them to view coverage quality from their location and submit complaints paired with technical measurements. Abu Kell described CMC Speed Test as more than a speed meter, saying it was designed as an auditing tool to compare operator performance and support technical regulatory decisions.
