BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraqi lawmaker Mohammed al-Biyati said the country’s vehicle count has reached roughly 6 to 7 million, a level he said has exceeded the capacity of main roads, particularly in Baghdad. He warned that the problem cannot be resolved through road expansion alone and requires a comprehensive national transport strategy. Biyati called for the renewal of aging public transport fleets, the development of urban and intercity rail networks, and the adoption of successful international models. He also proposed setting a service-life limit for older vehicles. According to the lawmaker, 97% of vehicles in circulation run on conventional fuel, contributing to worsening air pollution. He urged the government to encourage electric vehicle use and clarify regulations on imports and usage. Vehicle numbers in Iraq rose sharply after import restrictions were lifted in 2003, but road infrastructure and public transport did not keep pace. Biyati and other officials have called for a national roadmap covering public transport, railways and electric vehicles.
