Iraqi movement urges government response to Gulf states' UN maritime protest

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The People's Movement, formed in Iraq to oppose the Hûr Abdullah agreement, has called on the federal government to take a clear and official position on two protest notes submitted to the United Nations by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait over coordinates related to Iraq's maritime borders. In a statement, the movement said the Gulf states' moves at the UN represent a direct challenge to Iraq's maritime rights. The movement warned against any attempts to weaken Iraq's sovereignty or target its oil and natural gas resources in territorial waters, and urged the government to respond through diplomatic and legal channels. It demanded that Riyadh and Kuwait end what it described as pressure and legal intimidation on international platforms. The statement stressed that Iraq's maritime borders and sovereign assets are not subjects for bargaining or negotiation, and that any attempt to impose terms on these rights would constitute a violation of national sovereignty. The movement reiterated its call for the Foreign Ministry to adopt an active stance at the UN and other international bodies to defend Iraq's maritime coordinates and safeguard its offshore resources for future generations.
