Iraqi Finance Minister Drops Insult, Defamation Lawsuits Against Former Officials

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraqi Finance Minister Felah Sari has ordered the withdrawal of insult and defamation lawsuits the ministry had previously filed against former general managers, according to an official document. The document stated that dropping the lawsuits aimed to strengthen tolerance values, elevate public interest and establish principles of responsible dialogue. It emphasized that the decision was made in compliance with freedom of expression protections within the legal framework. The ministry indicated that the step was intended to redirect resources toward public service by highlighting a spirit of understanding and tolerance. The state reserved the right to initiate legal proceedings within existing laws against violations targeting institutions or public property.
