Iraq court sentences three to death over 140 kg of methamphetamine and caffeine

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Central Criminal Court has sentenced three defendants to death after they were caught with 140 kilograms of narcotics, according to a written statement from the court. The substances seized from the defendants were identified as methamphetamine and caffeine-based narcotics. The court said the ruling was issued under Article 27, Paragraph 1 of Law No. 2017 on Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances, along with Articles 47, 48 and 49 of the Penal Code. It added that the three individuals have been convicted of drug trafficking. The trial concluded at the Rusafa Criminal Court building in Baghdad, the statement said. The verdict was announced while preserving the defendants' right to appeal to a higher court.
