Babil provincial council files lawsuit against former MP over Karbala displacements remarks

BABYLON, Iraq — The Babil Provincial Council and the city's local administration have filed a lawsuit against former member of parliament Adnan Nimat Rashid al-Janabi, a sheikh of the Jubaybin tribe, over recent statements on the displacement file in the Jurf al-Sakhar area. According to a document signed by council head Asaad Mun'im Abdulkazim al-Muslawi, the complaint was submitted to the Hilla Investigation Court. The council said al-Janabi described security rescue operations as an "occupation" and characterized counterterrorism efforts as "executions" in social media posts. It argued his statements contained insults targeting the council and unsubstantiated claims aimed at inciting public opinion. Al-Janabi had said he possessed documentation showing roughly 3,000 homes demolished in the area, with the total number of destroyed housing units approaching 7,000. He also alleged that local residents had suffered damage to property and livelihoods, and reported killings and looting against the area's inhabitants. The return of residents displaced from the area since late 2014 has remained a central point of dispute. No further details were immediately available on the court's next steps.
