Iraq’s Health Ministry will begin paying the salaries of 2024 graduate contract doctors after Eid al-Adha, following a government move to resolve the payment delay. The decision is expected to clear the way for compensation owed from the dates they started work.
Health Minister Abdul Hussein al-Mousawi raised the contract doctors’ salary issue during a Friday night meeting with Prime Minister Ali al-Zidi. After the prime minister immediately contacted the Finance Minister, a meeting was held on Saturday between the Finance Minister and the Health Ministry’s Technical Deputy.
The meeting set out a practical mechanism to amend an earlier Council of Ministers decision. That amendment will be presented at Monday’s session.
The ministry said the doctors have been approved to receive three months of salary calculated from the dates they began work. Payments will be made after the end of the Eid holiday.
