BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Ammar Hakim, head of the Iraqi National Congress (formerly the Supreme Islamic Council), said the 1920 Iraqi revolution was a national achievement independent of outside agendas and a symbol of the country's struggle for independence and freedom. In a statement, Hakim described the 1920 uprising as an inclusive popular movement against colonialism that brought together Iraqis of different faiths and sects. Hakim said the revolution reflected the shared will of Iraq's communities and laid the foundation for the country's political unity. He stressed that the legacy of the uprising should be preserved and that drawing on the spirit of 1920 remains essential for safeguarding sovereignty and strengthening national unity today. The 1920 revolution, known as the Iraqi Revolt or the Great Iraqi Revolution of 1920, erupted against British administration following World War I and is widely regarded as a foundational moment in modern Iraqi nationalism.
