Iraq's anti-corruption body detains Electricity Ministry undersecretary

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's anti-corruption commission has detained Khalid Ghazi Atiyyah, the undersecretary for transmission and distribution affairs at the Ministry of Electricity, following an operation in Baghdad carried out by a force affiliated with the commission. The commission said the detention was carried out under a warrant issued as part of an ongoing investigation and within the authority granted by the judicial authorities. Atiyyah headed the ministry's transmission and distribution unit, which is responsible for operating Iraq's electricity transmission infrastructure. The commission said it is continuing to gather evidence in the case and that the judicial process will be overseen by the anti-corruption body. In a statement, the commission stressed that the operation was carried out within the legal framework. It said investigations into the management of public resources in Iraq are continuing, without providing further details on the allegations against Atiyyah or the specific transactions under examination.
