Former Iraqi international Fazil Abdulmajid dies in Kirkuk at 91

KIRKUK, Iraq — Fazil Abdulmajid, a former Iraqi national football player of the 1950s and 1960s, has died in his hometown of Kirkuk at the age of 91. Born in Kirkuk on 1 July 1935, he passed away at his home in the Wasiti neighborhood and was laid to rest at Musalla Cemetery. Abdulmajid began his career with local amateur sides in Kirkuk before wearing the city shirt and later the Iraq national team jersey at the 1957 Arab Games in Tehran. His goal against Libya in that tournament placed him among the early Iraqi scorers in Arab-level competition. Known for his powerful headers and the nickname "Golden Head," Abdulmajid turned to coaching after retiring and contributed to the development of several Kirkuk clubs. He was also recognized for supporting the growth of young players and local community events, leaving behind numerous commendations from sports institutions, according to local sports circles in Kirkuk.
