Ex-US Marine arrested near Trump National Golf Club with loaded firearm

BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S. federal prosecutors identified the armed suspect detained near a Trump National Golf Club in Southern California as a former U.S. Marine. According to court documents, the 38-year-old Janine John Tailey, a resident of Downey, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2008 to 2016 and rose to the rank of sergeant while assigned to the 1st Intelligence Battalion at Camp Pendleton. Military records show Tailey deployed to Iraq in 2008-2009 and to Afghanistan in 2010, and received two good conduct medals during his Marine Corps service. He was first spotted on July 31 photographing and recording security preparations on the club grounds ahead of a President Donald Trump fundraiser scheduled for August 4. When he returned on August 2, he identified himself as a member of a State Department security team. A search of his vehicle uncovered a loaded handgun, ammunition, binoculars and a "security officer" badge. The FBI said Tailey's actions raised "serious red flags" and that the investigation remains ongoing. Prosecutors also noted that Tailey was wanted in a separate burglary case in El Segundo.
