Ceuta migrant death toll from Morocco arrivals rises to around 100

CEUTA, Spain — The governor of Spain's North African autonomous city of Ceuta said the death toll from last week's wave of irregular migration from Morocco had climbed to around 100. Speaking at a meeting of the European Parliament, Juan Jesús Vivas said the number of people who died trying to cross the border had continued to rise. He added that between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remained in Ceuta and that the situation remained serious. Morocco's Interior Ministry said that around 40,000 people had attempted to cross into Ceuta irregularly on Sunday. The ministry said it was working with Spanish authorities to verify the reports of deaths and to determine the exact toll and the identities and nationalities of those who died. Spanish media reported that 88 bodies had been recovered from the sea off Ceuta. Spanish security sources said roughly 69,500 migrants who entered the city over the past several days had already returned to Morocco.
