With U.S. midterm elections days away, President Donald Trump could face a third impeachment if Democrats recapture Congress, The Hill reported. The outlet described such a move as "inevitable" should the party regain its majority in the legislature. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democrats' leader, would become Speaker if his party takes the chamber, putting him in line for the third-highest ranking position in the U.S. government, according to the report. The Hill noted that even a comfortable 12-seat Democratic majority in the House would not be enough to prevent impeachment proceedings against Trump. The newspaper added that the outcome would depend on whether Democrats also win control of the Senate. If Republicans retain their Senate majority, the impeachment effort would amount to little more than a "swift and failed" formality and could rally support around Trump and his party. A Democratic Senate, by contrast, would prolong the process and leave Congress with less time for other legislative priorities. Trump became the first U.S. president to face impeachment twice, in 2019 and 2021.
