Trump says U.S. will raise tariff on Canadian vehicles to 50% in 2027

WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he plans to raise the tariff on automobiles, trucks, auto parts and steel products imported from Canada to 50% starting January 1, 2027. The announcement comes as trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa have escalated. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the new duties would apply to all large and small cars and trucks, along with parts and steel products. The current U.S. tariff on automobiles stands at 25%, while steel imports are generally subject to a 50% duty. The move follows the failure of U.S.–Canada talks aimed at preventing new tariffs on certain Canadian goods. The United States began applying an additional 50% tariff on selected Canadian products on Saturday, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory duties on U.S. goods.
