Copernicus records highest-ever daily global ocean surface temperature

The European Copernicus Observatory announced that the global average ocean surface temperature reached 21.1°C on Saturday, surpassing the previous daily record of 21.09°C set in March 2024. The agency described the reading as unusual, noting that global ocean temperatures typically peak in March and April, coinciding with the end of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Copernicus attributed the rise to climate change combined with the El Niño phenomenon, a periodic climate pattern occurring every two to seven years that scientists say could be experiencing one of its strongest phases on record this year. The agency added that warmer oceans increase the risk of extreme weather by transferring more heat and moisture to the atmosphere, intensifying rainfall and storms. Copernicus official Samantha Burgess said the daily record provides clear evidence of mounting pressure on the oceans. The world's oceans absorb roughly 90% of the excess heat generated by human activity, particularly the burning of oil, gas and coal, and play a critical role in regulating the global climate.
