Fireworks thrown by Feyenoord fans injure five at Cambuur match

LEEUWARDEN, Netherlands — Five Cambuur supporters were injured when fireworks thrown by Feyenoord fans exploded in the stands during a Dutch top-flight match between Cambuur and Feyenoord in Leeuwarden on Saturday. The incident occurred in the first half when a large number of fireworks were launched toward the stands and several detonated. One firework exploded a few meters from Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow. The match was halted for about 20 minutes before play resumed. Cambuur said in a statement that the injured fans suffered hearing and vision problems in addition to their injuries. Cambuur said it is cooperating with authorities to identify those responsible. Feyenoord General Director Dennis te Kloese described the incident as terrible. Leeuwarden Mayor Ferd Crone condemned the events and pledged an investigation. The Dutch Football Association said it will review its protocols for incidents of crowd violence.
