Three people were killed and two injured in a bloody tribal clash between cousins in the El-Betira area of western Maysan, where police said they detained seven suspects after the violence erupted over old feuds. The Maysan Police Command said the arrests were made following a security operation that moved to contain the fighting and cut off escape routes.
A joint security force made up of personnel from the Al-Maimuna police station and units from the Iraqi Army imposed a security cordon around the area before carrying out raids and searches. The force then apprehended the suspects and brought the situation under control.
During the operation, security forces seized one Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol and the vehicle used by the suspects. Legal procedures were opened against those detained and they were referred to the relevant authorities.
A similar clash was also reported in the Sayyid Ahmed Al-Rifai area, where three people were killed and five were wounded. The injured were taken to hospital, while the bodies of those killed were sent to the forensic medicine department.
