BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraqi security forces have arrested a suspect in the killing of a colonel in Dhuluiya, south of Baghdad, an incident that had fueled tensions between local tribes, the Iraqi Security Media Cell said on Saturday.
The Security Media Cell said the colonel and another security personnel were killed in an armed attack that occurred during a land demarcation operation in the town. No further details on the operation or the circumstances of the shooting were immediately provided.
The Dulaim tribe issued a statement condemning the attack and called on notables of the Tay tribe to take a clear stance. The statement stressed that the blood of the slain colonel should not go unpunished and urged the prime minister to ensure that weapons remain solely in the hands of the state.
The tribe also demanded that the judiciary sentence the suspect to death at the scene of the attack and pursue accountability within the law, while urging restraint to prevent retaliatory violence. No further information about the suspect or the investigation was immediately available.
