Sulaymaniyah panel examines constitutional status of Peshmerga forces

SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq — A panel in Sulaymaniyah convened by the Cizîr Social Enlightenment Organization brought together academics, researchers and experts from law, politics and security to discuss the constitutional and political position of the Peshmerga forces within Iraq. The session, titled "Kurdistan Peshmerga Forces: Constitutional Gains and Political Realities," examined the Peshmerga's place under the Iraqi constitution and the challenges facing the force. Legal scholar Amêd El-Cizîrî said participants addressed the institutional development of the Peshmerga alongside its constitutional and legal dimensions, as well as its contribution to Kurdistan's security. He added that the dialogue among specialists offered academic perspectives relevant to safeguarding democratic practice and security stability in the Kurdistan Region. The panel was organized around three main themes: the relationship between the federal system and the Peshmerga, the legal and political challenges involved, and proposals for institutional development. Organizers said the event drew attendance from academic and legal circles, and participants stressed the importance of continued expert dialogue on constitutional institutions in the region.
