Smoke from Dora Refinery Spreads Across Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A dense cloud of smoke from the Dora Refinery in southern Baghdad spread over nearby districts and parts of the capital, footage from the area showed. Residents reported a sharp, sulfurous odor in the city. The Iraqi Green Observatory, which monitors environmental conditions, attributed the recurring odors to sulfur emissions from oil and industrial facilities, informal workshops on the outskirts of Baghdad, uncontrolled waste burning and prevailing weather conditions. It warned that unpleasant smells could continue in the coming days. Residents of Nahrawan and the area around Rashid Barracks suggested that the odor might be linked to waste burning. In Basmaya, residents called on the environment minister and other relevant institutions to take urgent action against pollution.
