BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” A short film competition organized in Baghdad has drawn attention to environmental challenges facing Iraq's Ahwar regions, organizers said. The "Young Eyes" competition, hosted by the Babylon Film Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and with funding from the Canadian government, concluded in the capital. Held under the campaign "Revive Ahwar, Revive Hope," the event aimed to raise awareness about environmental and climatic difficulties in Iraq's southern Ahwar areas. Young filmmakers from various Iraqi cities, particularly from the southern Ahwar regions, submitted films addressing climate change, drought, community resilience and women's environmental activism. The competition also explored themes of cultural identity, heritage preservation and environmental protection. Selection criteria favored productions focusing on ecological problems in the Ahwar and offering innovative solutions for protecting natural heritage. The event brought together government officials, international organization representatives and artists to discuss cinema's role in documenting climate change impacts. The initiative is part of a series of cultural activities highlighting the ecological and cultural importance of the Mesopotamian Ahwar.
