Livestock prices in Babil have risen noticeably as Eid al-Adha approaches, with market sellers saying demand for sacrificial animals is climbing even though buying activity has not yet reached its pre-holiday peak. The surge comes as families continue visiting local markets to find animals that fit their budgets.
Prices for sacrificial livestock are reported to start at about 400,000 dinars and can rise to 1 million dinars or more, depending on the animalโs size, characteristics and health condition. Sellers say the market is being driven by seasonal Eid demand and the higher level of activity that typically accompanies religious holidays.
A shortage of imported animals in local markets is also being cited as one of the main reasons behind the increase. Despite the higher prices, many families are still going to the markets in search of affordable options for the holiday sacrifice.
