Civil defense teams in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, are reinforcing an earthen bridge as they prepare for a projected rise in the Euphrates River level that could threaten low-lying areas. Officials said the riverbedโs lower sections and the zones where water spreads will be among the hardest hit if flooding occurs.
Emergency crews have been placed on full readiness, and preparations have been made to set up shelter centers if needed. Authorities also warned residents not to enter the riverbed or low-lying areas and not to try to cross flooded zones.
Officials said increased water releases from the Euphrates could push the river level two meters above its natural level. The measures are aimed at limiting flood damage and protecting nearby communities as water levels rise.
