Prof. Alexey Budеvitsyn, a Russian urology specialist, said benign prostatic enlargement, common in men over 40, is frequently overlooked and can lead to serious health problems. He described it as one of the most widespread urological conditions, though many men dismiss its symptoms. Early warning signs include frequent nighttime urination, weakened urine flow, difficulty starting urination and a sensation that the bladder has not fully emptied, according to Budеvitsyn. Sudden and hard-to-control urges to urinate are also listed as a symptom. Budеvitsyn said the condition rarely begins abruptly, with symptoms typically emerging gradually, and that many men attribute them to aging or fatigue. He urged men who previously did not need to urinate at night but begin doing so, or who experience a weakened stream or incomplete emptying, to consult a urologist promptly. The specialist warned that treating the signs as a natural part of getting older can delay diagnosis, allow the condition to progress and reduce quality of life. Benign prostatic enlargement, a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland that presses on the urinary tract, is generally associated with aging.
