A Russian internal medicine specialist, Dr. Ivan Yerimenko, has warned that frequent and excessive consumption of potato chips can contribute to a range of health problems. Dr. Yerimenko said chip packets typically contain high levels of salt and saturated fat, noting that regular consumption can contribute to elevated blood pressure, weight gain and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. He stressed that the issue is not limited to potato chips, extending to similar snack products made from corn or vegetables, and recommended that such items be eaten in moderation. The specialist acknowledged that some companies produce baked or low-salt alternatives, but said these options cannot replace vegetables, whole grains and a balanced diet. A scientific study cited in his remarks found that the high fat and calorie content of potato chips, combined with their limited ability to promote satiety, can make them particularly harmful for children, potentially contributing to weight gain and adverse effects on development.
