Russian Health Expert Warns Against Excessive Sugar, Urges Dietary Shifts

Excessive sugar consumption significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and liver failure, according to Fatime Dzgovuyeva, head of the nutrition care department in endocrinology at Russia's National Medical Research Center.
Dzgovuyeva noted that sugar-rich diets lead to the accumulation of visceral fat around internal organs. This process accelerates the formation of cholesterol plaques on vessel walls, elevating the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease.
Irregular eating habits and the tendency to consume food quickly while on the move are primary drivers of overconsumption. Additionally, chronic insomnia, stress, and psychological pressure further intensify cravings for sweets.
To reduce sugar intake, the expert recommends managing hunger cues, specifically suggesting a five-to-ten minute wait after main meals before consuming desserts.
Healthier alternatives to traditional sweets include unsweetened yogurt, small portions of nuts, fresh fruit, and whole-grain biscuits.
