EU imposes new sanctions on Iranian judges and cyber official

TEHRAN, Iran — BRUSSELS — The European Union has imposed new sanctions on a group of Iranian judges and a senior official in a cyber unit over alleged human rights violations and information suppression, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on Friday. Kallas did not disclose the names of those added to the sanctions list. Kallas said the EU would continue to hold accountable those responsible for what she described as a deteriorating repression environment in Iran. The decision comes as human rights organizations warn of an intensification of executions in the country, particularly against political detainees and protesters on security charges. The Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization said hundreds of prisoners face charges that could result in executions and urged the EU to make halting executions a priority in its negotiations with Tehran.
