A doctor at the Moscow-based SM-Clinic network, Subhi Samedov, has warned that misuse of air conditioners can lead to a range of health problems, particularly when units are poorly maintained or set to excessively low temperatures.
According to Samedov, irregular or careless use can contribute to colds and respiratory infections, Legionnaires' disease, allergic rhinitis and asthma, sinusitis and fungal infections. He said dirty filters accumulate dust, microbes and mold, which are then circulated into indoor air, while cold, dry air can irritate the airways.
To reduce the risks, Samedov recommended regular cleaning and timely replacement of filters, avoiding direct exposure to cold airflow, and not lowering room temperature excessively. He also stressed the need for proper ventilation and maintaining an appropriate humidity level indoors.
