Russian oncologist says Russia records about 60,000 new lung cancer cases a year

MOSCOW — A Russian oncologist and chemotherapy specialist has drawn attention to lung cancer incidence in Russia, saying the country records roughly 60,000 new cases each year, of which about 50,000 are in men. Dr. Resul Ahmadeyev, an oncology and chemotherapy specialist at SM-Clinic hospitals in Russia, said the disease is difficult to detect in its early stages and progresses rapidly in the small-cell subtype, which accounts for 15% to 20% of all cases. He identified all tobacco products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, as the leading risk factor, noting that the risk rises sharply after 20 to 30 years of regular smoking but that cases also occur among new users. The specialist said regular monitoring of chronic lung conditions such as chronic bronchitis and COPD, along with the use of masks and adherence to workplace safety rules in dust- and carcinogen-exposed industries such as mining, construction and the chemical sector, can reduce cancer risk. He recommended annual low-dose CT scans for people in risk groups. Ahmadeyev urged patients to seek medical care without delay if they experience symptoms lasting more than three to four weeks, including cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, or unexplained weight loss.
