Police arrest suspects in Basra woman's killing within eight hours

BASRA, Iraq — Police in Basra said they identified and detained the suspects in the killing of an unidentified woman found dead in the Shatt al-Arab district in less than eight hours. The Basra Provincial Directorate of Public Security said counter-crime units intensified their work after preliminary examinations at the scene, and that the circle of suspects was narrowed through forensic and digital investigation as well as the tracking of technical leads. Investigators identified the victim and retraced her movements to reach the suspects, the directorate said in a statement. The inquiry found she was killed by relatives following a personal dispute, according to the statement. The Basra Provincial Directorate of Public Security said legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspects and the case file has been referred to the competent authorities to complete the investigation.
