Canadian study trials virtual reality to ease children's MRI anxiety

Researchers in Canada have begun testing virtual reality technology to reduce fear, anxiety and pain during pediatric medical procedures, according to a newly published study. In the trial, 18 children were immersed in a virtual reality environment before undergoing magnetic resonance imaging scans. The VR headset introduced them to the MRI machine's operation and prepared them for the actual scan, aiming to ease concerns linked to enclosed spaces, noise and the need to remain still. Health professionals involved in the study said similar VR applications could be expanded to other medical settings, including vaccinations, dental visits and surgical preparation, to improve children's cooperation during treatment. The researchers reported that early results indicated VR may help lower anxiety levels in young patients. The authors cautioned that the work remains at an early stage and that larger studies are needed to confirm the findings.
