One migrant dies, 72 rescued in English Channel crossing attempt off northern France

French maritime authorities rescued 72 migrants from a boat trying to reach the United Kingdom across the English Channel, French rescue services said. The vessel, carrying more than 110 people, was spotted late Thursday into Friday off Gravelines, near the French coast, prompting a rescue operation. During the operation, emergency responders administered first aid, including cardiac massage, to passengers on the boat. One migrant, found in serious condition, was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital but could not be saved, according to the officials. Three others were injured, with one requiring urgent medical care. Search and rescue operations in the area continued, French authorities said. The incident follows the arrival of 494 migrants in Britain on Thursday alone, renewing debate over this year's English Channel crossing statistics.
