LONDON โ One person has died and more than 200 others have been infected in a Salmonella outbreak in the United Kingdom, according to the UK Health Security Agency. The agency said 207 confirmed cases have been recorded since the start of the year, all linked to a single strain of the bacterium.
Of the confirmed cases, 199 were reported in England, with six in Scotland and one each in Wales and Northern Ireland. More than a third of the English patients required hospital treatment. Those affected include infants and people in their nineties, while two patients developed serious bloodstream infections.
Health authorities are investigating a possible link to eggs imported from outside the UK. Officials said the current strain appears connected to cases recorded in 2025 that were also tied to contaminated eggs. By 13 August, 114 infections had been detected across five different food businesses, with transmission risk reported to persist at two of the establishments.
The agency stressed that no evidence has been found connecting the outbreak to eggs or poultry produced within the country. Salmonella is typically transmitted through consumption of contaminated food or contact with it. Officials noted that contamination cannot be detected by the appearance or smell of eggs, and advised consumers to buy eggs from trusted sources, cook them thoroughly and check expiration dates.
