BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq's Communications Minister Mustafa Sindi has drawn criticism after responding to academic Laith Shabir with abusive language on social media. Shabir said he was not personally affected by the response but stressed that the language fell short of what is expected from a government official and that the ministerial office carries a higher level of responsibility.
Shabir had previously posted on social media criticizing the handling of social issues and currency-related files without naming Sindi. The minister's reply, according to Shabir, included harsh insults such as "fazayi" and "zubale" directed at him.
The exchange has renewed debate in Iraq over the limits of language used by officials when communicating with academics and citizens, and over the growing role of social media platforms as venues for political confrontation rather than dialogue. Critics have called on the government to set clearer standards of conduct for senior officeholders, particularly those heading strategically important ministries.
Observers have also urged that competence, experience and respect for differing views be emphasized as criteria in the appointment of officials in a country long worn down by political and administrative crises. No further details were immediately available.
