BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has called for the Kurdistan Region parliament to be reactivated and a new regional government formed without delay. KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed said the party is seeking to avoid early elections in the region and instead wants practical steps to relaunch legislative work and establish the tenth cabinet. Legislative elections in the Kurdistan Region were held in October 2024 after a two-year delay. The KDP won 39 seats, while its traditional rival, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), secured 23. Roughly two years after the vote, political parties have yet to reach an agreement on the distribution of posts and disputed files needed to form the next government. Mohammed said recent political developments in the region made it essential to restart parliamentary activity and take practical steps toward forming a new cabinet. He also disclosed that efforts were under way to hold a meeting soon between the political bureaus of the KDP and the PUK to discuss the stalled negotiations. On the early election option, Mohammed said the party would not pursue that route if a practical path to convening parliament and forming a government could be found.
