Iraq arrests suspect in killing of Baghdad police brigadier general

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Interior Ministry said Sunday that security forces have arrested the suspect in the killing of Brig. Gen. Hisham Mohammed Tella, a district police chief in western Baghdad's Karkh district, and handed him over to judicial authorities. Maj. Gen. Mikdad Miri, head of the Interior Ministry's Media Relations Department, said in a written statement that intelligence and technical operations by the Falcons Intelligence Cell pinpointed the suspect's location in the Rusafa side of Baghdad, where he was captured at the home of a man who had been sheltering him. The homeowner, Miri said, had been sought by Mosul intelligence units under Article 4 of the counterterrorism law and was found to be a member of ISIS. Miri said both suspects were taken into custody and referred to the relevant judicial authorities, with legal proceedings underway. The force's media cell chief, Lt. Gen. Saad Maan, said Saturday morning that the prime suspect in the attack had been apprehended. The attack took place Thursday in the Dora area in southern Baghdad while security personnel were carrying out the demolition of illegal structures around the Dora, Kerar and Dijla neighborhoods. Brig. Gen. Hisham Mohammed Tella and security member Khalid Abbas Laffte were killed, and four others were wounded.
