BAGHDAD, Iraq — Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dahil has given the province’s fuel products directorate until next Tuesday to resolve a gasoline shortage affecting the northern Iraqi province. During a meeting at the Nineveh governorate building, the governor said officials who fail to carry out their duties must be held accountable under the law. The meeting was attended by representatives of members of parliament, the head of the provincial council’s energy committee, the Nineveh operations commander, the provincial police chief and commanders of other security bodies. Al-Dahil ordered the establishment of a high-level committee chaired by the operations commander and the police chief to monitor gasoline from its point of origin to its delivery to fuel stations. The committee will oversee the operating schedules and opening hours of both public and private fuel stations, as well as the quantities of gasoline dispatched to each station. It is also expected to ensure that all gasoline sent to stations is sold to the public and to help bring the crisis to an end. No further details on the shortage’s cause or its expected duration were immediately available.
